Sports Update 1 February 2024

Indoor Hockey

During the December holidays, The PSi Nationals tournament was back and once again a number of our learners were selected for the various teams.

Congratulations to the following learners for their selection:

U16 Cape Seals:

  • Leah Hofmeyr (Grade 11)

U16 Cape Sharks:

  • Tara Neville-Smyly (Grade 10)
  • Caila McKend (Grade 10)
  • Tatum Malherbe (Grade 11)

U16 Cape Sunbirds:

  • Zanda Matiwana (Grade 10)

U18 Cape Seals:

  • Jodie Blows (E23)

A special congratulations to Jodie Blows and Leah Hofmeyr who were also selected to be part of the U18 and U16 African All-Stars teams made up of the best 10 players at the tournament in their respective age groups.

Open Water Swimming

Caitlin Evans (Grade 8), Skye Micklethwaite (Grade 12) and Michaela Labuschagne (Grade 11) took part in the Tygerberg Aquatics Open Water Swim in Grabouw on 28 January. 

Caitlin took part in the 5km swim and finished with a time of 1 hour and 16 minutes. She placed 3rd overall, and 1st in her age group. This time qualified her for the South African National Open Water Championship in March and allowed her to swim the 3 km as well. 

Skye Mickelthewaite took part in the 1km swim where she placed 2nd out of her age group. She finished with a time of 14 minutes, 49 seconds 

Michaela took part in the 3km swim where she placed first out of the women and 5th overall. She finished with a time of 48 minutes and 38 seconds.

Rowing

The much-anticipated Junior Western Cape Rowing Championships took place on Saturday, 27 January 2024 at the Zeekoevlei Yacht Club. Rustenburg Girls’ High School was represented by its girls who row for the Peninsula Girls’ Rowing Club (PGRC), who had an excellent regatta.

Lana de Klerk (Grade 9) and her rowing partner from St Cyprian’s High School, came first in the Junior Women’s U15A doubles race over a 1km distance. Lana de Klerk also won the JW U15A sculls race over the same distance.

Anouk Bugler (Grade 8) and her rowing partner from Springfield Convent High School came first in the Junior Women’s U15B doubles race over a 1km distance.

Both Lana and Anouk also participated in the Junior Women’s U15 Quad race and their crew took home the gold medal. Well done, we are so proud of your achievement.
