Sports Update 2 November 2022

Thank you for your support over the past few weeks of Term 4 Sport. From Monday the Exam Sports programme kicks in. The link is below:

EXAM SPORTS PROGRAMME

The Exam sports programme differs from the Term 4 programme as there are far fewer sessions being offered.

If your session is being offered then you are still expected to attend it. However, if your session no longer exists, you may join any session/ sport of your choosing. It is not necessary to sign up before next week. Just ensure that your name does appear on the register of that session (Grade 8s and 9s) that you attended. HP sessions will count as a sport session for Gr 8s and 9s.”

Water Polo

We are very proud of the 8 Rustenburg girls – pictured below – who will be representing Western Province at the IPT Water Polo tournament to be held in Durban in early December. This picture was taken at the capping ceremony where the players are officially welcomed onto the WP team.

Swimming

GALA NEWS: Rustenburg competed in the ‘Individual Gala’ at SACS on Thursday 27 October. The RGHS A team placed 5th out of 8 schools. Well done to all our swimmers.

Congratulations to Ashlee Pretorius (Grade 11) and Isabella Webber (Grade 9) on being awarded their Western Cape Age Group Half Colours for swimming. These colours are awarded to swimmers who participated in an individual ‘A final’ event at SA Junior and Senior Regional Championships in the past season.

On Saturday, Michaela Labsuchagne (Grade 9) participated in the Langebaan Express completing the 6km swim. She placed first by four minutes with a time of 1.16.17. The conditions were amazing with a strong tidal push. Michaela is extremely pleased with her results. Well done.

Michaela is pictured with a bright orange cap, way out in front of her competitors.

Touch Rugby

Friendly match vs Rhodes High School:

A friendly match was played at Rustenburg on Thursday 27 October between RGHS 3 and Rhodes HS. It was a wonderful opportunity for many of the players to gain their first match experience.

A celebration of schools coming together to play Touch Rugby

A Touch Rugby tournament, organised by Ms Barrett-Theron, was held at Rustenburg on Friday 28 October. The focus was ‘getting to play the game’. Rustenburg entered 4 teams, the top 2 teams being of equal strength.

There were 2 pools and the Rustenburg teams came out on top in each pool.

This is what Azra Mahmood (Grade 11) had to say: “We were very excited to finally kick off the start of our new touch rugby season with a friendly tournament. We were joined by Wynberg and Springfield and enjoyed a lively afternoon filled with many games. It was amazing to see our learners get some game time and see the enthusiasm everyone had on the field. We are excited to see the growth of the many new players we have this season and are looking forward to seeing all the new talent flourish as we continue with our practices. We encourage learners to come down during exams and catch a break from studying on a Wednesday afternoon. The times are available on the updated exams sports schedule and we hope learners will use this as an opportunity to get some more game time before the league commences in January next year.”

Well done to all our players.

Water Polo

Friendly Matches vs Westerford High School

Rustenburg Girls’ water polo First team, Second Team and the U16A team travelled to Westerford High on Friday afternoon, 28 October, to play in a round of friendly matches. This was all in preparation for the coming season in 2023, where our teams will hit the ground running. The teams looked to put their training to the test and take the opportunity to build their team culture, with some high-intensity play and skill refinement. The scoreline was merely a bonus, as all three teams expected nothing more than a performance. The results from last week’s matches are as follows:

Biathle

Skye Micklethwaite (Grade 10) represented South Africa at the World Biathle Championships in Machico, Madeira Island, Portugal.

Following on from last week’s news, Skye competed on Sunday in the individual Biathle event. She came 10th overall and the top 3 South Africans in that race picked up a silver medal in the team category. The individual race was a tough one and this time there was a strong current in the swim too.

All in all a great achievement and an excellent result for Skye. We are so very proud of you!

Gymnastics

Thanaa Phillips (Grade 9) competed at the SA GYM GAMES in Johannesburg and came 2nd overall in SA for Level 6.

She placed 1st in her floor routine and 1st in her beam routine despite her tough competitors and very strict judges. These are outstanding results and we are extremely proud of you. Well done, Thanaa.
