Sports Update 27 October 2022

A belated congratulations to 2 of our staff members for completing the Cape Town Marathon on Sunday 16 October. Both Ms Susan Viljoen and Ms Marga Smith did us proud!

The revised Sport timetable for the examination period will be shared with the learners early next week. Sport will continue throughout the assessment weeks that start on Monday 7 November and will end on Friday 2 December. Sport attendance and participation will still be compulsory for all Grade 8s and 9s with sessions starting and ending earlier in the day.

We celebrated our matric sport learners on Friday 21 October. The following learners received colours and trophies for their achievements this year:

Swimming

Rustenburg competed in the ‘Combined Gala’ at Rondebosch Boys High School on Thursday 20 October. We entered an A and B team. The RGHS A team placed 3rd and the B team placed 7th out of 9 schools. Well done to all our swimmers.

The past weekend, Michaela Labuschagne (Grade 9) took part in a gala where she qualified to represent WP at SANJ (South African National Juniors) in March 2023. At this gala, she swam a Senior B National qualifying time for the 800-meter freestyle event, clocking 9.59.79 as well as swimming SANJ times in the 400 and 200-meter freestyle, the 100 and 200-meter backstroke events. What an outstanding achievement this is. Congratulations and good luck with all the hard work that is ongoing.

Biathle

Breaking news:

Skye Micklethwaite (Grade 10) is currently representing South Africa at the World Biathle Championships in Machico, Madeira Island, Portugal. This morning, 27 October, Skye and her partner, Luke Tinhof, placed 5th in the Biathle mixed relay event. Her Mum has this to say: “ The course is tough with soft sand and sharp turns. The competition field is also tough so this is an excellent outcome! Now it’s rest and refocus for Sunday’s individual race.”

Do know that Rustenburg is rooting for you, Skye. Good luck!

Dancing

Hannah October (Grade 8) competed in the WP Dance championships on Saturday at the Parow Civic Centre. She and her partner won all 5 dances (samba, cha-cha, rumba, paso-doble and jive) in the Junior Championship. Congratulations, Hannah.
