Sports News and Results 3 March 2022

We said a sad goodbye to Ms Hlela at the end of February.

As we come to the end of the term, the sports programme becomes rather ‘messy’ as the Summer sport and Winter sport trials start to clash. We ask that learners please excuse themselves from regular sessions that they need to miss to attend trials.

All Social Sports and Football will continue until Friday 18 March. Please continue to attend your sessions.

We said a sad goodbye to Ms Hlela at the end of February. She has taken up a job offer in Johannesburg that will allow her to continue with her studies. Thank you for all you have done for our learners over the past year. In particular, the water polo players are going to miss Ms Hlela’s passion, energy and the love that she brought to their practices, matches and tours.

The game ended 1-1, with Lucy Kane getting on the scoresheet. Thank you to Herschel Girls’ School for accommodating us on the day.

The penultimate Indoor Hockey fixtures were played on 2 March against Westerford. All fixtures were played at Westerford.

Touch Rugby

Congratulations to all of our players who played extremely well in their matches on Friday. Our first team has been working very hard in preparation for the semi-finals of the league against Groote Schuur, which will commence on Friday 4 March. A special thank you to all of our supporters who helped to bring a lot of ‘gees’ to the teams from the sidelines.

We will be having a braai on 11 March to end off the season after the finals and prize-giving. We invite all of the players’ families and friends to come and join us. Formal invitations with more information will be sent out soon so please save the date.

Old Petrians Tournament

The U19A water polo team participated in the Old Petrians Water Polo Tournament hosted by St Peter’s College from 24 -27 February 2022. The U19A team played some challenging oppositions and at the end of the pool-stages were three-way tied for 4th place in their pool.  Unfortunately, due to goal FINA rules in breaking a tie, RGHS came 7th in the pool stages. Undeterred by this, the U19A team went on to win the Shield Cup and came 21st out of 28 teams in the tournament. At the closing ceremony, RGHS was awarded the Guy Pinker Floating Trophy Fair Play Award given to a team that showed the best spirit and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Congratulations to the U19A team on a great tournament. Thank you to Miss Hlela and Coach Oliver for their time and expertise.
