Squash
Congratulations to Genevieve Lang (Grade 9) and Tara Neville-Smyly (Grade 12), who will be competing at the Growthpoint SA Squash Nationals at Makers Landing at the V&A Waterfront.
Only eight players per gender and age group in South Africa qualify to compete on the glass court, which is installed specifically at the Waterfront for this prestigious tournament.
We are incredibly proud of Genevieve and Tara for achieving this outstanding accomplishment and wish them the very best as they take to the glass court and represent Rustenburg Girls’ High School at the Nationals!
SA Top Schools
The Squash Team competed at the Top Schools Tournament in Pietermaritzburg over the long weekend. The team comprised Genevieve Lang, Emma Hilton, Emily van Coeverden de Groot, Lucy Hilton, Abigale McKay and Tayla van Riel. Qualifying for this prestigious tournament was a significant achievement, allowing the players to compete against some of the strongest school squash teams in the country.
The tournament provided the players with valuable exposure to a high standard of squash, with some experiencing this level of competition for the first time. The team embraced the challenge, gaining valuable experience and learning from every match.
Beyond the competition, the tournament also provided an opportunity for the players to meet new people and build friendships with fellow squash players from across the country. The team finished as the eighth-best girls’ squash team in the country, an excellent achievement and one that reflected their hard work and commitment throughout the season.
The players returned from Pietermaritzburg with renewed ambition and high aspirations for next year’s competition. Their experience at Top Schools has provided a strong foundation as they look to return more competitive and determined to improve on their eighth-place finish.
Football: GO-CUP Challenge
Three teams were entered in the Girls’ Only Cup (GOC), hosted at the Deutsche Internationale Schule Kapstadt (DSK). The tournament was played in an indoor five-a-side format. Despite being in a different environment from the grass field the teams were accustomed to, the players showed unity and determination against some of the strongest teams in Cape Town. All three teams performed exceptionally well, demonstrating adaptability, teamwork and a strong competitive spirit.

Netball
All the Rustybugs were out on the DF Courts this past week, smashing hoops as we near the end of an exciting season. While the icy chill may have been evident for most of us, our teams certainly brought the heat, taking to the courts with fierce determination and competitive netball.
A huge thank you to our parents for coming out in such great numbers to support the teams on the day. Your encouragement and energy from the sidelines never go unnoticed and mean so much to our players.
Absenteeism did create a few challenges for our teams, but true to their spirit, the players never backed down. Instead, it provided an opportunity for others to step up, embrace new roles and fill the gaps left by those who were unable to be there. It was a wonderful display of teamwork, adaptability and resilience—qualities that have defined our Rustybugs throughout the season.

Hockey
The past weekend was a very busy weekend for all of our A-teams. The teams played in the tournaments they qualified for, respectively.
The U19A team played in the Rising Challengers Cup, which is for teams ranked 13 to 25 in South Africa. The U16A Team competed in the Top Schools Tournament for teams ranked 1-12 in South Africa. U14A did not qualify, but were invited to the Girls Rising Champions Cup as they were ranked 27th in South Africa.
The U16A team, ranked 10th in South Africa, was always going to have a tough time as they went up against the best in the country. The team started with a loss to St John’s DSG, who finished the tournament in second place, before beating Menlopark. Day 2 was tough as the team was well beaten by eventual tournament winners, St Mary’s Kloof, before again bouncing back to beat Herschel. The team then faced the number 1 team in SA, Paarl Gim, with both teams needing a win to make the semi-finals. The team took the lead, and Paarl Gim scored with 2 minutes left to draw 1-1, meaning both teams would play 5-8 instead of 1-4. Rustenburg only had 1 hour to recollect themselves before playing a very strong Bloemhof side, who they also drew against, eventually losing on penalties. The girls then unfortunately lost the 7-8th playoff 0-1 to Affies in a very tight contest.
The U14A team started their tournament with a 0-0 draw to Middelburg before losing their next 4 games in tightly contested matches to Affies, Garsfontein, Waterkloof and Durbanville. The girls would then beat DSG in the first cross-pool game before drawing 1-1 with The Wykeham Collegiate to share 9th place.
The U19A team finished the tournament in 11th place, having had a mixed bag of results. The team lost to DF Akademie, Affies, Stellenberg and Fairmont in the pool stages while beating St Anne’s 3-1. In the cross-pool game against Paarl Girls, the team lost 1-0 before beating DF Akademie 3-1.
A massive congratulations to all of our hockey players as they flew the Rustenburg flag high this weekend.
Rhythmic Gymnastics
Congratulations to Andrea Grigorova (Grade 10) on her outstanding performance at the Western Cape Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, held from 8–10 August.
Andrea achieved an impressive three silver medals, placing second in:

Adding to this fantastic achievement, Andrea has also qualified for the Western Cape Rhythmic Gymnastics Team, which will represent the province at the National Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships at the end of September.

Congratulations to Isabella Ciolli (Grade 9) on her outstanding performance at the Western Province Rhythmic Gymnastics Trials over the weekend.
