Celebration of Creativity 2023

The Grade 10-12 Art, Design and Photography Celebration of Creativity Festival took place from 17-18 August. Below are some reflections from learners:

“Thursday evening’s Art opening was an absolute success. The event was vibrant and lively filled with fantastic Art costumes, delicious snacks and a warm crowd. I was so happy to see my fellow art peers accompanied by their friends and family, all coming together to celebrate and appreciate Art, Design and Photography. So much effort was put in by the staff and students and it all paid off. We have an amazing art department that never disappoints. I’m so grateful to have been a part of it and I can’t wait for next year’s celebration.”

“Friday’s seminar day was an enriching experience. A big thank you to sensory artist, Caro Jesse, Photographer, Nobukho Nqaba and milliner Chrystal Birch for sharing their unique career journeys and creations with us.”

“The designer/milliner Chrystal Birch, inspired me the most. She had such a lively, ambitious and confident attitude and a quirky sense of humour. Chrystal spoke about her journey of becoming a famous hat maker, sharing valuable skills of perseverance, hard work and achieving your dreams. She had worked her way from a run-down factory to the cover of Vogue.”

“I attended the life drawing workshop for the first time on Friday. It was a new experience for me to draw a nude model. The atmosphere was calm and respectful, as we drew the human anatomy. We were all immersed in the moment and produced gorgeous pieces of work. I managed to surprise myself with how much I liked my drawings. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone by trying something new and am very satisfied with the results.”   Taarah Davids (Grade 11)

“The Celebration of Creativity this year was again filled with tons of beautiful art, and some really good food (especially those millionaire’s shortbreads). Thursday evening was such a fun and fantastic night filled with so many unique activities prepared by the teachers and some really creative peers of mine – the sock puppet show was adorable, I loved the Gr11 Photography class’s white shirt paintings, and that fire which allowed you to burn stuff was very satisfying and beautiful. There was some really great music and I loved the vibe in general. Following that, Friday’s speakers were all so lively and their speeches all felt so genuine – I really liked the photographer, Nobukho Nqaba, in particular, who gave me some incredible insights into how an artist creates their work from personal experiences; not to mention she also seemed like such a sweet and genuine person!”  Yuhan Gong (Grade 11)

“Attending the art exhibition this year was a wonderful experience. There were amazing activities that parents, friends and students loved taking part in. From taking photos at the photo booth with friends, getting whatever we wanted painted on our faces and throwing wishes into the bonfire with strangers every detail was created with so much love. I loved being able to bring my friends and family to the exhibition showing off all the art students’ hard work in a beautiful environment filled with live music and crazy art costumes. The annual school art exhibition is always something I look forward to and I am glad to say this year expectations were exceeded astronomically.  Levi -Reese Bowers This year’s art exhibition was extremely fun. There were many beautiful artworks and photos up on display. There was a wide range of other things to do as well such as taking photos with your friends in a Photo Booth, getting face paint done, making sock puppets with your friends and burning pieces of paper with things written on about stuff you want to let go or burn. This was definitely a great experience and hope to attend again next year.” Mahira (Grade 11)
