Sports Update 18 May 2023

Squash

The Western Province Youth Squash League continued with Rustenburg A1 vs Hershel High School. It started hard as 2 players were sick and were unable to play. This resulted in one of the players having to play 2 games. This was not a favourable approach but demonstrated sportsmanship when a player stepped in so that the team can still play in the league. We thank you for representing the school even if it was against very strong competitors. Rustenburg A1 lost 0-14. Despite the results, we are proud of you.

Football

The Schools Soccer League continued on Thursday 11 May with Rustenburg’s 1st and 2nd teams playing against the 1st and 2nd teams of Bergvliet High School. Despite the cold wet weather and very strong competitors, the teams got on the football field and gave a nail-biting performance. The 1st team lost 3-2 and the 2nd team lost 1-0.  Regardless of the score, the teams gave it their all and we are proud of them.

Hockey

Arguably the most highly anticipated derby on our calendar was upon us on 12 May. Rustenburg hosted Herschel in the “HerschBurg” derby. With beating drums, sizzling burgers and packed stands, the atmosphere was exhilarating, and Friday Night Lights was truly brought to life.

Three tough matches were played at Rustenburg, while Herschel were kind enough to accommodate seven of our teams on their astro.

With large numbers of our teams depleted due to a sickness doing its rounds, it was always going to be a tough day at the office.

The U14A and U19A teams put on brave displays, narrowly losing their games 3-2, with the games being concluded in the last few minutes. A special mention to the U14C team who managed to register a draw, in a weekend of tough results.
