Sports Update 2 February 2023

Tennis

After almost a full week of tennis for the Grade 8’s last week, some of them have managed to fight their way into the school teams with some outstanding results from trials. We only have 6 teams this year. With a lot of potential team players having to wait on the sideline it was no easy task sorting out the ladder for Term 1. It is great to see that there is still such great interest in the wonderful game of tennis!

See the results below from matches that took place on January 31st.

Indoor Hockey

A jam-packed start to the sporting calendar at Rustenburg saw all of our Grade 8 learners have an opportunity to try out for various team sports. With the selection process swiftly completed for Indoor Hockey, we played our first matches of the season on 25 January. We were able to put together seven teams this year, and a number of learners joined our social teams as the demand for Indoor Hockey continues to grow at the school. Six of those seven teams had fixtures in the first round, which featured matches against both St Cyprian’s School and Pinelands High School.

We are very proud of the performances we put in, especially considering some of our players hadn’t had an opportunity to train with their new teams until match day.

Well done to all our swimmers.

Water Polo

Our RGHS First Water Polo Team took part in the U19 Girls Water Polo Night Series at Reddam House Constantia indoor pool, from Tuesday, 24th January. The team had the first tough game of the season, where they faced Reddam on opening night. Our first team played incredibly well in the first quarter and ended only 2 points behind at 3-1 to Reddam. After the first half, the opposition’s counterattacks were just too good, and with a few loose passes went behind 6-2. The score remained the same after a fightback by the team. At the end of the 4th and final quarter Reddam wrapped up the game, finishing 10-2.

In the second match of the series on Tuesday, 31 January, the team faced Rhenish Girls U19A. The team made the game harder than it seemed with a few silly mistakes but did their best to stay in the game. The team took the fight to Rhenish, being the faster swimmers on the day, but lacked that clinical final ball and finish. Our First team was defeated 7-2 by Rhenish.

Rowing

Lana de Klerk (Grade 8) participated in the Western Cape Rowing Championships this past weekend. She received a brilliant GOLD medal for the u15 double race, and a stellar SILVER medal for the u15 Sculls race (that means one person in a boat, in case you’re unfamiliar with rowing terms). She achieved all this whilst not even competing in her age group (u/14). Congratulations on your wonderful achievement Lana, we are super proud of you!
