Sports Update 12 March 2026

Football

On 28 February, the RGHS Football Team participated in the Rhenish Preseason Festival hosted at Rhenish Girls’ High School. The tournament provided an excellent opportunity for the team to gain valuable match experience at the start of the season.

Overall, the team delivered a commendable performance, winning two of their four matches. One victory was a convincing 4–0 win, while the other was a hard-fought 1–0 result. The two matches that were lost were both very narrow 1–0 defeats, highlighting how competitive the team was throughout the festival.

In a remarkable display of adaptability, striker Rethabile Sello and midfielder Mischa Fife stepped into central defensive roles for the first time. Both players performed exceptionally well, demonstrating outstanding technical ability, composure, and teamwork. Their performance in unfamiliar and demanding positions was truly impressive.

Overall, the festival proved to be a valuable and worthwhile experience for the team as they continue to build momentum for the season ahead.

Touch Rugby

The RGHS Touch Rugby teams will be competing in the final playoff matches on Friday, 13 March, hosted here at RGHS. After weeks of dedication, training, and competitive fixtures, our teams have earned their place in the finals and will be giving their very best on the field.

We would like to invite the RGHS learners, staff, parents, and the wider school community to come along and show their support. Matches will begin at 14:50, and we look forward to seeing our school community come together to cheer on our teams as they aim to finish the season on a high note.

Let’s fill the sidelines and proudly support our RGHS Touch Rugby teams!

Tennis

Tennis Stars Shine: WP Colours Selection

We are thrilled to announce that three of our talented tennis players have been selected for Western Province Colours! Congratulations to Rylie Hodgskiss(Grade 11), Sienna Malan (Grade 10), and Evelyn Lindsay (Grade 11) on this outstanding achievement.

Their dedication, hard work, and consistent performance on the courts have truly paid off, and we are incredibly proud to see them recognised at this level. This is a fantastic reflection of the strength of our tennis programme and the commitment of our athletes.

Please join us in celebrating Rylie, Sienna, and Evelyn, and wishing them continued success as they proudly represent Western Province!

Hockey

The hockey season has started with a bang. Our U14A, U16A, and U19A teams all played in festivals over the weekend. The results were very good, showing our ability to compete with the very best. Unfortunately, our U19A team narrowly lost to Herschel but registered impressive wins over The Settlers High School and Drostdy. They then fought hard to draw against last year’s league winners, Stellenberg. The U16A team lost narrowly to Rhenish and Bloemhof in an impressive display against teams who are constantly in the top 10 in South Africa. They then beat Durbanville before unfortunately running out of steam and losing to Fairmont. The U14A team came together for the first time to play for the Rustenburg badge and fought hard all weekend, losing 2, drawing 1 and winning 1.

This week, in the first team, Amy Penney, Zoe-Jane Cole and Kezia George would all run out for the 50th time as U19A hockey players, showing tremendous commitment and drive. Congratulations to all three learners.

Swimming

Congratulations to Sky Eyssen (Grade 8), who participated in the SA Level 2 Regional Age Group Gala held in Oudtshoorn on 7–8 March 2026.

Having recently transitioned from primary school to high school, Sky approached this gala with some nerves, particularly as it was the final competition of the season. Despite this, she delivered an excellent performance and achieved the following results:

  • 100m Butterfly – Gold (New Personal Best)
  • 200m Backstroke – Bronze
  • 50m Freestyle Relay – Gold

We are incredibly proud of Sky’s achievements and look forward to seeing her continue to grow in confidence as she balances both her academic and sporting commitments in the seasons ahead.

Open Water Swimming

Caitlin Evans (Grade 10) represented Rustenburg Girls’ High School at the SA Open Water Swimming Championships held in Jeffreys Bay from 6–8 March.

Caitlin delivered exceptional performances across multiple events:

  • 7.5km race (U17) – 2nd place
  • 5km race (14–16 yrs) – 1st place
  • 3km knock race (Open) – 7th place
  • 4 × 1km mixed relay (14–16 yrs) – 2nd place

These impressive results have earned Caitlin eligibility for South African team selection later this year. We congratulate her on her dedication and outstanding achievements, and we wish her the very best as she continues to compete at the highest level.

Springfield Festival – Support Our Teams

This weekend, our RGHS Football, Netball, and Hockey teams will be proudly representing the school at the Springfield Festival, hosted by Springfield Convent School from 13–15 March.

The festival is a wonderful opportunity for our learners to compete against strong opposition, showcase their skills, and continue building team spirit early in the season. Our teams have been preparing well and are excited to take part in this prestigious preseason event.

We warmly encourage learners, parents, staff, and the wider RGHS community to come along and show their support. Your presence on the sidelines provides great encouragement to our players and contributes to the positive spirit of school sport.

We wish all our teams the very best as they represent RGHS with pride at the Springfield Festival. Let’s get behind them and show our support!
