RGHS Derby Day 2025

Rustenburg was alive with spirit and energy as we proudly hosted the Rhenish Derby, one of the most anticipated events on our sporting calendar. From the moment the first whistle blew, the atmosphere was electric — the stands filled with cheers, colour, and the unmistakable “Rusty Bug” gees.

The day brought moments of grit, determination, and pride. Our players gave everything on the fields and courts, competing fiercely against strong opposition and showing true resilience in the face of tough challenges. While the scoreboard did not always swing in our favour, the heart and fight shown by every Rustenburg team was nothing short of inspiring. Supporters, staff, and coaches stood united behind our players, creating an incredible sense of community that made the day unforgettable.

Derby Day was about far more than results — it was about celebrating milestones, building memories, and cherishing the friendships and rivalries that sport creates. Our learners walked away with heads held high, embodying the Rustenburg spirit of courage, commitment, and camaraderie.

It was the last edition of “Friday Night Lights” for our matric learners in the U19A team, and it was wonderful to have our stalwart and vice-captain, Ally Goulding (Grade 12) celebrate the momentous milestone of 150 caps for the U19A hockey team. Congratulations, Ally.

In keeping with celebrating milestones, it was the occasion of Coach Olu’s 200th match in charge of the U19A Hockey team when the team took on Springfield at the Challengers’ Cup – a game that was celebrated with a 1-0 victory.

Matches vs. Fish Hoek

On Thursday, 14 August, our netball teams ventured to the deep South for an exhilarating afternoon of matches against Fish Hoek. Despite the chilly and windy conditions, our players’ excitement was palpable. The games served as crucial preparation for the Rhenish derby, allowing our coaches to fine-tune their game plans. A special shoutout goes to the U14 C & D and U16 A & B teams for their exceptional performances. While some of our teams underestimated Fish Hoek’s ability, the experience was memorable.

RGHS 1st team vs Somerset College

In what seems to be more of a regular occurrence this year, the U19A team embraced the Tuesday night lights in a pre-played game against old Boland rivals, Somerset College.

It was a game for the spectators and an electrifying watch for those who braved the icy conditions to come and support their teams.

College got off to a blistering start, with Rustenburg seemingly buckling under the early pressure, and raced into a two-goal lead. The second quarter was much of the same, with errors proving to be the theme of the night for the Rusty Bugs. After some stern words at the half-time interval, the beginning of the tale of two halves was upon us. With just over a minute played in the third quarter, Rustenburg pulled one back, but still trailed by two goals going into the last quarter. Sensing they had wrestled back some control in the game, the team really started to turn the screws and had levelled the game within five minutes of the final quarter. The search for the elusive winner went right until the final whistle, but was in vain.

A massive show of character was displayed by the team to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 3-3 result in the way that they did. Goals were scored by Zoe-Jane Cole (Grade 9), Ally Goulding (Grade 12) and Kate Naiker (Grade 11).

Squash

Our 2nd Squash Team recently took to the courts in their latest league fixture and delivered a fantastic performance. With determination and teamwork, they secured a well-deserved victory, showcasing both skill and sportsmanship.

A big congratulations to the team on their win — we are proud of the way you represented Rustenburg!
