Jan Van Riebeeck Cross Country Race

Thursday, 21 May, our dedicated Cross Country team faced a true test of grit at the Jan Van Riebeeck Sports Ground in Tamboerskloof. This event, set against the picturesque backdrop of Lion’s Head, featured a challenging course. Despite dismally cold and wet weather, and a 2km course rendered slippery by the elements, 17 of our courageous runners completed the race. Their determination was truly inspiring, with every single participant showcasing impeccable form and improving their placings even under such arduous circumstances.

A massive congratulations are in order for Phillipa du Toit and Sienna Malan, who both secured impressive 2nd-place finishes in their respective age groups. The highlight of the day, however, belonged to Ella Gardner, who once again demonstrated her dominance by claiming 1st place in her age group – an incredible fourth consecutive race win!

The Jan Van Riebeeck Cross Country race proved to be a challenging yet rewarding experience for our team, highlighting their resilience and commitment to personal bests. Well done to all our runners for their outstanding efforts and enthusiasm!

PGSGU Cross Country

On Monday, 26 May, Rustenburg Girls’ High School’s Cross Country team proudly represented our institution at the annual PGSGU Cross Country race. This prestigious event brings together the top girls’ schools in the Cape Peninsula, including Rustenburg, Herschel, Springfield Convent, St Cyprians, and Wynberg Girls. This year’s competition was hosted by Springfield Convent, providing a challenging yet scenic course.

The race featured a demanding 2×2 km route that wound through the grounds of Springfield and into Wynberg Park. The course, notably hilly, proved to be a true test of endurance for all participants. Despite the challenging terrain, our Rustenburg team delivered an exceptional performance, securing a tied 2nd place overall finish with Springfield! Individual accolades also highlighted our team’s strength, with Emily Gray placing 2nd in the U19 age group and Eva Van der Westhuizen achieving an impressive 3rd place in the U14 age group. Congratulations to all our runners on a fantastic performance at the PGSGU Cross Country!

Netball

Bloemhof Derby

On Friday, 22 May, our netball teams travelled to Stellenbosch to participate in the annual netball derby against Bloemhof Girls’ High School. This fixture serves as a cornerstone event for our netball program, offering invaluable exposure and developmental insights.

The afternoon saw our U14 to U17 age groups compete against Bloemhof’s C and D teams, while our U19A team faced Bloemhof’s U19B team. While the overall results may not have entirely reflected our aspirations, the unwavering effort and dedication displayed by every Rustenburg team were truly commendable. The primary objective of this derby extends beyond mere scores; it is fundamentally about providing our netball players with exposure to formidable opposition, allowing our coaches to meticulously assess team standards, identify areas for strategic improvement, and ultimately elevate the overall calibre of netball at Rustenburg.

Despite facing one of the Western Cape’s top netball schools, there were undeniably positive outcomes to celebrate. Our U16A team demonstrated exceptional form, successfully maintaining their impressive unbeaten run. Furthermore, the U19A team showcased significant growth and development since their recent appearance at the National All Girls Festival. This derby was a great learning curve, affirming our commitment to continuous improvement and reinforcing the vibrant spirit of Rustenburg netball.

Cape Town High Schools Netball Playoffs

On Tuesday, 27 May, our U16A netball team competed in the Cape Town High Schools Netball (CTHSN) league playoffs. Having triumphed over every opponent in their league regular, their qualification for this crucial playoff game was a testament to their dominance throughout the season.

The playoff match pitted our U16A team against Herschel’s U16A team, another formidable force that had dominated their pool. The game began with a challenging start for Rustenburg, as Herschel’s attacking capabilities and flawless shooting combination gave them an 8-11 lead by halftime. However, our U16A squad remained resolute, determined to protect their unbeaten league record. The second half saw a resurgence from Rustenburg, with Caitlin Gerber and Retha Sello delivering brilliant passages of play that kept the team firmly in contention. Georgia Gibbon also deserves special mention for her rebounds and clinical intercepts, turning defense into attack. Despite drawing the second half 12-12, Herschel’s strong start ultimately secured them a narrow 20-23 victory.

Though the final result wasn’t a win, the U16A team’s journey throughout the netball season has been nothing short of inspiring. Their consistent high-level performance in the league is a clear indication of the significant development within Rustenburg netball. We are incredibly proud of this age group’s growth and look forward to even greater successes from them in the future.

Hockey vs Bloemhof/Fairmont

Double-header fixtures bring an excitement that is shortly followed by exhaustion. This was the first double-header of the season, with our teams locking horns against fierce north rivals, Bloemhof and Fairmont.

Matches took place across all three venues over the two days, and it was a tough challenge for all of our teams – one that we will take many learnings from.

The Bloemhof derby has become a feature on our calendar, and it is always special testing ourselves against some of the best players the province and country have to offer. Thank you to Bloemhof for hosting us on a chilly, but beautiful Friday night and Saturday morning.

Congratulations to Georgia Parr (Grade 9), who made her first team debut in the match against Bloemhof.

Dance

Congratulations to the MOTION22 Dancers Representing South Africa

We are thrilled to celebrate and congratulate the talented group of dancers selected to be part of the MOTION22 Team, who will be travelling to Castellana Grotte, Italy, this July to represent South Africa at the 2025 World Dance Movement. Included in this group is RGHS learner, Adriana de Paulo (Grade 10).

This incredible opportunity includes participating in masterclasses led by world-renowned international instructors, followed by competing in the prestigious World Dance Movement Competition.

These dedicated dancers have been training up to 12 hours per week, all while balancing academic and other sporting commitments. Their training spans a diverse range of dance styles, including Ballet, Modern, Contemporary, Acrobatics, and Hip Hop.

Their commitment and excellence have not gone unnoticed — they’ve earned scholarships to attend both the workshops and the competition, thanks to top placements and multiple first-place finishes at South African competitions throughout 2024.

We extend our best wishes to the entire team and their passionate coach, Amy Lee Payne, as they continue their preparations. Stay focused, stay dedicated — we are incredibly proud of you and will be cheering you on every step of the way!

We cannot wait to watch you shine on the international stage! 🌟
