Sports Update 15 May 2025

Squash

The first squash league match of the season kicked off on Monday, 14 April. This year, RGHS A is competing in the A-Boys League, while RGHS B is playing in the Girls A-League—an exciting opportunity for both teams to showcase their skills against strong opposition.

The opening fixture saw RGHS A take on Bishops in a thrilling encounter. Although the team did not secure a win, their tenacity and determination were truly commendable.

Following a bye week, RGHS B went on to face Westerford High School and later Wynberg Girls’ High School, with both matches highlighting the team’s resilience and growing skill on the court.

We are incredibly proud of the efforts shown by both teams and look forward to seeing their continued growth, team spirit, and sportsmanship as the league progresses.

Netball

Rustenburg vs Wynberg

Our netball teams faced off against Wynberg Girls’ High School in a series of exciting fixtures across two days of competitive play.

On Tuesday, 6 May, our U14 and U16 teams travelled to the Cavan Road Courts to take on their Wynberg counterparts. It was a fantastic day at the office for the U14A, B, and D teams, all of whom delivered convincing wins. The U16A team represented Rustenburg with pride, putting on a clinical and structured performance that highlighted their growing cohesion and tactical awareness, while the U14C and U16B teams were unlucky to come away with losses.

The remaining fixtures were played on Thursday, 8 May, with Rustenburg hosting Wynberg for the outstanding matches. Despite their best efforts, our U15 and U17 teams were unable to outclass their opponents on home turf, but the matches provided valuable experience and learning opportunities for all involved.

Cross Country

Our Cross Country athletes competed at Rondebosch Boys’ High School on Wednesday, 7 May, in what was a memorable event both for the competition and the setting. The race course, a 2km loop repeated for various age groups, wound through three fields—including Rondebosch’s pristine sports grounds—against the spectacular backdrop of Table Mountain. The lively atmosphere, created by the buzz of different sporting activities taking place simultaneously, added an extra layer of energy to the event.

Grade 9 student Ella Gardner once again impressed with a dominant performance, finishing 1st in her age group. Ella has shown impeccable form throughout the season and continues to set the standard with her consistency and determination.

Reflecting on the event, Cross Country Captain Lily Irish shared her thoughts:

“The race at RBHS was filled with beautiful scenery… I thoroughly enjoyed this course and would love to do it again if given the opportunity.”

Well done to all our runners for representing Rustenburg with pride and perseverance. Each race is a step toward greater strength and stamina, and we look forward to seeing what the rest of the season holds.

Football

The Schools Football League resumed on 23 April, with both the First and Second Teams playing their opening matches of the season. After using the pre-season tournaments to fine-tune their strategies and build team cohesion, both squads were well-prepared to step into the league.

Facing strong opposition, the teams rose to the challenge, showcasing impressive skill and determination as they worked hard to secure goals. Their performance reflected the hard work and commitment put in during pre-season preparations.

We look forward to an exciting season ahead and are eager to see how the teams progress and grow throughout the league.

Hockey vs DF Malan & Durbanville

The 2025 league season got off to a bang, with a midweek evening fixture beyond the boerewors curtain against DF Malan. Our teams got off to a very promising start, with good results all round. The second league matches against Durbanville were the first ones hosted at home this season. Chicken burgers were on the braai, the parents were in full voice for some entertaining hockey, and we look forward to hosting more games during the course of this season.

Elite Girls’ Hockey Challenge

Shortly after the All Girls’ Festival, the U19A team played in the inaugural Elite Girls’ Hockey Challenge held in Paarl. Featuring a selection of 20 of the best girls’ hockey teams in South Africa, the team faced tough tests to prove they can compete at the highest level. With the likes of Oranje, Waterkloof, Collegiate, St Mary’s Kloof and DSG – teams that we wouldn’t ordinarily play – it was a privilege to be invited to be part of this elite company.

The team had a strong first day, sealing a win over Garsfontein and narrowly losing out to All Girls’ champions, Collegiate. Day 2 saw the team’s qualification for the quarter-finals, where they faced Oranje. The road to the final day was a tough one, with many lessons learnt. The team played against Durban Girls’ College for 7th place, narrowly losing the game in a tightly contested penalty shootout, after the game ended 1-1 in regulation time.

U19A Hockey Milestones

Congratulations to Payton Hendricks (Grade 10), who reached the milestone of playing 50 caps for the U19A team during the Girls’ Challenge.

As far as milestones go, the biggest ones were reserved for two senior players who have reached milestones that have yet to be reached since records have been captured at Rustenburg. With a journey dating back to 2022, when they joined the First Team, their commitment to Rustenburg Hockey, both on and off the field, has been immense and immeasurable.

Congratulations to Leah Hofmeyr (Grade 12) and Tatum Malherbe (Grade 12), who reached milestones of playing 150 matches for the U19A team during the All Girls’ Festival and Girls’ Challenge, respectively.

Dance

We are thrilled to announce that Jade Achilles (Grade 10) has been selected to be part of the South African Dance Team that will represent the country at the International Dance World Cup in Spain, taking place from 3–12 July.

This is a phenomenal achievement, and we are incredibly proud of Jade. We wish her all the best as she prepares to take the international stage. Go make South Africa and Rustenburg proud!
