Sports Update 10 April 2025: Hockey during the Holidays

Holidays? More like hockey-days! As usual, the first term holidays were filled with hockey for our U16 and U19 teams.

Fairtree U16 Hockey tournament

The traditional Fairtree U16 Hockey tournament was hosted in Stellenbosch by Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof from 28-30 March, featuring some of the top schools from across South Africa over two tiers. Our U16A team played in the top tier. With pools consisting of 10 teams, it meant that each team would play a minimum of 10 games over a gruelling three days – with the team playing four games on Saturday.

The very young U16 side walked away with some commendable results, including a hard-fought draw against hockey powerhouse Paarl Gim. The team finished in 16th place in the tournament and have now set their eyes on their home tournament, The Champions Cup, from 11-13 April.

Belgotex Easter Tournament

The Belgotex Easter Tournament has become a staple on our calendar, and this year, we were honoured with an invitation to feature two teams in the tournament, which we duly accepted.

The RGHS Invitational team featured a blend of youth and experience, with some U17 and U18 players joining a largely U15 core group to make up the team. Notably, the Invitational team claimed the scalps of two school first teams, beating Bridge House and HTS Drostdy on their way to a 43rd placed finish in the tournament containing 48 teams.

A special thank you to Ms Jonker and Coach Owen for taking such wonderful care of the team.

The U19A team, looking for yet another strong showing in the tournament, was made up of some of the team’s stalwarts and a group of younger players that is larger than has been the case in the past.

That being said, the team got off to a good start, winning both games on day one, which meant they progressed to the Cup section of the tournament. As the competition got tougher, so did the team. Beating Wynberg 3-0 meant that the team made their way into yet another semi-final of this tournament. Unfortunately, the team will have to wait another year for the elusive gold medal, as they fell narrowly at the hands of St Paul’s College from Namibia. After much dominance in the bronze medal match, and some heroics from the EG Jansen goalkeeper, the U19A team had to settle for a fourth placed finish – an outstanding result, in a tournament featuring 48 teams from across Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa.
