WP Touch Rugby Finals

KAMPIOENE!! Our Touch Rugby First team are champions of the Western Province A-League Touch Rugby – yet again!! Led by inspirational captain Morgan Hunter, coach Nafees’s charges took to the occasion and made Rustenburg proud. A dominant display of Touch Rugby by the team and moments of magic provided by talismanic MVP (Most Valuable Player) Amelie Visser, including a memorable hat-trick of tries, meant the team ran out 4-1 victors in a hotly contested final.

An impressive league run dating back to 2009, where Rustenburg won the first of a multitude of titles, putting us once again at the pinnacle of Touch Rugby in the Province.

Indoor Hockey

PGSGU Indoor Hockey Championship

As with every year, the WP Indoor Hockey League came to its conclusion in traditional fashion, with the PGSGU Tournament. Winners in 2023 at the same venue, the team has good memories of running out at St Cyprian’s to compete in the tournament.

The fate of the 2025 team was ultimately different, seeing experience being a massive factor in deciding the eventual winners of the 2025 event.

A tough start against Springfield meant that the team had it all to do for the rest of the tournament, and while they recovered well in the following game, the mountain proved too big to climb, falling to a 4th place finish.

Swimming

On 6 March, our swimming team competed in the prestigious Super Schools Swim-Off competition. This annual inter-school event brings together the top high schools from Cape Town and the Boland region for a thrilling showcase. Rustenburg qualified for this competition due to their impressive performance at the A-League Gala.

The results were as follows: The 15-and-under girls team finished in 7th place with 154 points, while the 18-and-under girls team placed 6th with 180 points.

Despite the intense competition, the swimming team displayed great determination and effort, capping off what has been a demanding but rewarding season. Their performance in the Super Schools Swim-Off reflected both their dedication to swimming at RGHS and the progress they’ve made throughout the season.

Netball

From 7-8 March 2025, the U14 Netball Team participated in the Quest for the Best Netball and Hockey Tournament at Rhenish Girls’ High School. A week before the tournament, trials were held to select the U14 squad, from which 10 talented netball players were chosen to represent Rustenburg.

On Friday, 7 March, the team traveled to Rhenish, full of excitement and ready to take on the challenge. Their first match was against Desmond Mpilo Tutu High School. Rustenburg began strong, with captain Allegra Radelli leading the charge. She maintained a 100% goal average in the first half as Goal Attack. Despite a solid start, the team narrowly lost, with the final score ending at 10-12. The heat in Stellenbosch intensified as the team faced the hosts, Rhenish, in their second match. The game started as a close contest, with both teams slotting in goals. However, Rhenish ultimately came out on top, and Rustenburg lost 7-13. In their final match of the day, Rustenburg faced Springfield. The team was determined to end the day on a high note. In the first half, both teams were evenly matched, skill-wise. Unfortunately, a costly error in the dying minutes of the second half resulted in a narrow 8-9 defeat.

Despite losing all their games on the first day, the team showed significant improvement as the day went on. They proved their potential and demonstrated the progress they made, which made this tournament feel more like a pre-season event for the team.

Day 2 promised to be a tough challenge, with back-to-back fixtures against Reddam and Wynberg Girls’ High School. The match against Reddam was physically demanding, with both teams competing fiercely. Rustenburg fought hard to stay in the game, though they were always trailing, as Reddam had the advantage of the centre pass. The game was tied at 6-6 for much of the second half, but Reddam ultimately edged out Rustenburg with a 7-6 victory.

Following the match against Reddam, there was no time to dwell on the loss. The team had to quickly regroup and head straight to court 3 to face Wynberg Girls’ High School. It was as if the team found a new burst of energy for the match. Goal shooter Laura Marchant had an outstanding performance, scoring consistently throughout the game. Rustenburg secured a 7-5 victory, concluding the tournament on a positive note.

A standout performance in the tournament came from Berenice Mutombo (Grade 8), who was selected as one of the top 10 players of the tournament. Berenice displayed exceptional defensive skills, consistently shutting down her opponents and making crucial interceptions. Her efforts truly shone throughout the competition, and she was recognised for her outstanding contribution to the team.

Overall, the tournament was a valuable experience for the U14 team, marking their first high-level competition and their first time playing together. Although they faced some tough losses, their improvement throughout the tournament was evident, and the team’s potential is undeniable. This tournament sets a promising tone for the season ahead, with the team showing great promise and enthusiasm for future challenges.

Zoey Rhoda’s (Grade 10) strong play in this prestigious event earned her qualification for the Flight Division of the Championship – an exciting milestone in her journey,

Zoey’s highlight came in the Round of 32, where she delivered a commanding 4&3 victory over Keisha Wiltshire. After an even start, Zoey found another gear on the back nine, winning four holes in a six-hole stretch to secure her place in the next round.

In the last 16, she faced a tough competitor in Isabella Obrey and found herself three down at the turn. But true to her fighting spirit, she battled back, winning three holes on the back nine before ultimately falling just short in a hard-fought 2&1 defeat.

Next up, Zoey will be competing in the WP Women’s Amateur Championship at Durbanville Golf Club – another great opportunity for her to keep building on her momentum! Congratulations Zoey!
