Hockey

RGHS Past vs Present

As the saying goes, “All good things come to an end”. We saw the end of the journey of our hockey-playing matric learners this past weekend, with two exciting matches that will hopefully become a permanent fixture on our school calendar.

On a day dedicated to send-offs, our first match saw E23 match up against their coaches and family members. Eager to show that they know a little bit about hockey, the coaches surged into the lead, only to be pegged back with a few minutes left on the clock. The game ended 1-1.

An exciting return to the calendar saw us welcoming our awesome Old Girl Hockey players back at RGHS to play against the U19A team. In a tightly contested game, with the past pupils rolling back the years, the result was never a certainty. With goals being traded, the U19A team took what looked like a lead to seal a victory, but just as in the previous game, there would be a late equalizer with a beautifully crafted move, ending in a simple finish. A breathless game (mostly due to fitness levels) ended 2-2.

The hockey was followed by a braai with family, friends and coaches. A truly special time to honour and thank our matric learners for everything they have done for hockey at Rustenburg. A journey that started in 2019 was disrupted by the pandemic and saw a very special group rise above many challenges to display character, dedication and ultimately, a family spirit. Thank you to E23 for the memories. The hockey family will not be the same without you, but we hope to see you at the 2024 Past vs Present Hockey match.

Football

Payton Hendricks (Grade 8) was part of the Tramway U14 Girls team that qualified to play in the Cape Town Tygerberg Football Association Knockout final which took place on the 30 September 2023 at Greenpoint Salesians. Apart from winning the Knockout final against Stephanians FC, 7-0, Tramway girls also won the league. They played 15 games and won 15 games scoring 92 goals for the season.

Well done Payton and your team on your achievement. We are very proud of you!

Artistic Gymnastics

Thanaa Phillips (Grade 10) represented the Western Cape in level 7 for Artistic Gymnastics at the South African Gymnastics games that took place in Centurion in October. She achieved an impressive 1st place in her floor routine, 3rd place for Bar Routine and finally achieved an overall 2nd place in SA. What an accomplishment. We are very proud of you, Thanaa.
