Although the History Department has had many of its traditional activities and excursions curtailed, Ms Scharneck and I have still found ways of keeping the flag flying.
Earlier in the year, the Grade 12 History classes provided comments on Freedom Day and, more recently, they combined to provide an online Women’s Day Assembly. Lauren Heiberg’s “Women’s Day” song provided a very powerful statement for women today.
Recently, some of their creative pieces were entered for the annual “White Rose” project at the Holocaust Centre. Stay posted for these results after the Awards Ceremony on Sunday 30 August.
The South African Institute of International Affairs’ annual quiz took place online on Thursday 20 August and 8 of our Grade 11s participated. According to Cindy Littlefield (55th), it was “a thoroughly thrilling and an enriching experience”.
Thami Giyose, who finished 13th out of 89 contestants also won a prize, experienced “an adrenaline rush that was thoroughly enjoyed! ” India Nathan came 16th, Misbah Toefy 27th and Kate Birch 41st.
Zoe-Lee Holtzhausen (25th) found it a “fast paced yet very enjoyable and insightful experience”. For Sarah Irwin (21st) it was: “A test of knowledge and memory that gave my brain a much needed wake up call after five months of quarantine but filled with fun!” Keenah van der Merwe was upbeat on Friday 21 August: “Morning Mr van Dyk. I wanted to thank you for encouraging me to take part in the SAIIA quiz. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Everyone did well. I came 10th and won an Exclusive Books voucher”.
