Members of Interact recently returned from an outreach trip to the Transkei. Holly Rowe, Chloë Allison, Nina Beckurts, Katrin van der Merwe, Jenny Darley Waddilove, Jenna Frost, Lauren Schaefer and Alex Smith, along with a group of fellow Rustenburg girls (Hannah Rens, Francesca Palmieri, Megan Lodder, Megan Tromp, Olivia Paige-Macdonald, Adwoa Danso, Leigh Natus, Julia Stokell), Springfield girls and Rondebosch boys spent two weeks teaching at Isolomzi Senior Secondary School.
Apart from teaching and tutoring students, they were also able to hand over the collection from the stationery and bra drives that Interact ran throughout the term. The two weeks were definitely eye-opening for everyone involved. The girls were able to engage with peers from different backgrounds and embrace a new culture, for example, trips to the local Sangoma!
The experience was truly inspiring for all involved and the dedication of the students at Isolomzi left those involved in complete awe. They worked all through their holidays, sometimes until 12am on improving their academics. Isolomzi’s pass rate has improved from 44% to 97% since the Transkei outreach was initiated and Interact looks forward to returning next year to continue our bond with this special school.
