Music Notes 24 August 2017

Dear Music Parents

I would like to dedicate this newsletter to the Music Matric Class of 2017 as the last two weeks have basically been all about the Matrics. There are only five candidates in the Department this year, but Stephanie, Imke, Mishka, Da Eun and Caitlin truly form one of the most reliable and pleasant classes I have ever had the privilege to work with. They have been excellent with meeting deadlines and the quality of their practical and written work is top notch. Well done, Matrics!

On Monday, 14 August the Matrics presented their practical programme in the form of a recital. Charlie’s Hope was turned into a fantasy-like space with fairy lights and a red carpet. Our Matrics looked beautiful in their evening gowns and showcased their talents with their various solo and ensemble works. The evening was well attended and a positive atmosphere was the cherry on the top.

Monday, 21 August was an even bigger day for the Matrics as it was their Final NSC Practical Examination. They were examined by two external examiners and unfortunately their marks for that practical session will never be revealed. However, I can say with confidence that they applied themselves with distinction.

Lastly, I would like to congratulate Kaitlin Downie, Younsung Kim (violins) and Jiyoon Jeon (harpsichord) who performed in Gemma Hall’s (recorder) NSC music practical ensemble, together with Yeji Lee (cello) at La Rochelle Girls’ High School in Paarl on Thursday evening, 17 August.  They performed two movements from Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto in a minor, RV 108.  Their performance at La Rochelle was outstanding.  They also achieved 94% in the Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfod and have been awarded a GOLD MEDAL.

Mishka Sooful and Bianca Cilliers (recorder duet) achieved a SILVER MEDAL at the Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfod for their performance of a Corelli Trio Sonata.

Fantastic work girls! Keep it up!
