On Saturday 5 October 2019, three of our learners represented Rustenburg at the GET Provincial Visual Art Opening Gala Celebration held at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) at the Waterfront. The ceremony was the culmination of the learners in the Senior Phase (Grades 7 to 9) receiving awards from all eight education districts in the Western Cape. The artworks were adjudicated according to a common set of criteria and explored the theme “Every picture tells a story”. Karen Bosman (Grade 8), Manina Viljoen and Tayla Swan (both Grade 9) were fortunate to be selected.
One of the highlights of the event was having the privilege of listening to guest speaker, Dr Gcina Mhlope, a South African freedom fighter, activist, actress, storyteller, poet, playwright, director and author, who is passionate about education and the arts. Her charismatic performance of her speech and her message of conserving culture and educating others through oral storytelling, captivated and inspired the audience. It is encouraging to know that the Arts are being promoted by our Education Department.
It was a privilege to be able to represent our school and we are incredibly grateful for the goodie bags we received for our efforts. Thanks need to go to our teachers, Ms Chambers and Ms Castle, for entering us into the competition and supporting and mentoring us.
