Debating Society Update No 2

Term 1

1. ROTARY LEAGUE DEBATES:

The Juniors and Seniors have been training enthusiastically since late January under the expert coaching of Tamsin Metelerkamp (Juniors) and Jordan Pfotenhauer (Seniors). They participated in the first two rounds:

 

Round 1: (Monday 27 February) vs LEAP College at RGHS

  • The Juniors won the debate by successfully opposing the motion: THIS HOUSE WOULD CRIMINALISE DOPING IN SPORTS. Kristina Semmelink was judged the best junior speaker for the evening.
  • The Seniors were also successful in proposing the motion that: THIS HOUSE BELIEVES THAT DEVELOPING NATIONS SHOULD PRIORITISE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OVER CONSERVATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT. Mikayla Shaw was judged best speaker.

 

Round 2: (Thursday 23 March) vs SACS at SACS

  • Although the Juniors lost their debate proposing the motion: THIS HOUSE WOULD MAKE MATHEMATICS AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES COMPULSORY FOR ALL STUDENTS AT HIGH SCHOOL, Kristina Semmelink was judged the best junior speaker for the second time.
  • The Seniors also lost in proposing the motion that: THIS HOUSE WOULD BAN THE OWNERSHIP OF DOMESTIC PETS.

2. Movie afternoon: The debaters were inspired by the viewing of the film, The Great Debaters, on Monday 27 May.

 

Term 2

Term 2 is always a busy debating term and we have quite a packed schedule for 2017:

  1. Rotary Round 3: (Monday 24 April) vs Fairbairn at RGHS in the Thomson Hall

RGHS Juniors will OPPOSE the MOTION: THIS HOUSE WOULD NATIONALISE THE MINES IN SOUTH AFRICA

The SENIORS will debate the motion: THIS HOUSE SUPPORTS SOUTH AFRICA’S WITHDRAWAL FROM THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT

2. National Girls’ Schools’ Festival (Thursday 27 April to Sunday 30 April)

This year it will be hosted by the Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool in Pretoria.

This year’s touring team is as follows: Aviella Abrahams; Katia da Silva Valente; Mikayla Shaw; Jade Smith and Kristina Semmelink. Congratulations to these girls.

 

3. FACETS Debating Competition:

RGHS will participate in this competition from 2 to 11 May 2017 at Sans Souci:

  • Monday 2 May: Round 1
  • Thursday 4 May: Round 2 (quarter-finals)
  • Monday 9 May: Round 3 (semi-finals)
  • Thursday 11 May: Round 4 (finals)

 

4. Rotary Round 4: 15 May

5. Rotary Round 5: 29 May

Junior motion: This House supports a constituency based voting system over a proportional representation system in South Africa.
