News from some Old Girls
Buhle Ngaba
Letter to Mr Skelly from Buhle Ngaba, Rustenburg Headgirl 2008:
"I have some exciting news which I’d love to share with you: I’ve been studying at Rhodes University (Grahamstown) for the last three years and so much has happened in that time. As you know, Grahamstown is the home of the National Arts Festival. This made my tertiary studies at Rhodes in Drama seem even more appropriate. I was fortunate enough to be cast in several theatrical productions in 2010 and 2011 and this professional platform has given me direct exposure to the South African Arts industry, as well as an opportunity to start grooming myself to become a valued entity within this sphere. For the first six months of 2011 I was at Leeds University (United Kingdom) on exchange at their Performance and Theatre Studies department. My time spent studying Drama overseas was incredible and certainly impacted my views about what ‘theatre’ is and should be. I discovered that South African theatre-makers really do have something unique and distinct to offer the international performance world. This was refreshing because modern culture places so much emphasis on Hollywood-style ‘drama’ that local performers can forget their worth and just how much they have to contribute. The highlight of what happened while I was away was the birth of my own theatre company, “Meisies on a Stoep” – this honour I share with another upcoming South African actress. Together we staged a production, directed by Ms Lynne Maree, called “The Petticoat Chronicle” which was showcased at the 2011 National Arts Festival. “The Petticoat Chronicle” has subsequently been invited to this year’s Artscape’s Women’s Festival. This year I have been chosen as one of six performers in Ms Janet Buckland’s theatre company, “ubom.” I am so excited about this opportunity, especially because Mr Rob Murray from “Conspiracy of Clowns” is the new director. Both Andrew and Janet Buckland will be working directly with us. This is the company’s tenth anniversary and I will be touring South Africa as a member of it. This marks my official professional debut into the South African acting industry. I am very grateful to have been included."
Nicky Greenwall
Nicky Greenwall graduated from Rustenburg in 1996 after spending all twelve of her school years at Rustenburg, a place where she learnt to always laugh when in doubt. On her return as guest speaker at the 2010 Matric Prize Giving, the popular television presenter and producer was surprised at how familiar the school felt and how clearly she could recall her own Matric Valedictory. In the years following her graduation from Rustenburg Nicky graduated from the Red and Yellow School of Advertising and got involved in the South African entertainment business, something that has always been one of her goals. Nicky began her career as the presenter, producer and co-writer of E-TV’s “E-Arts” in 2002 and has since presented some of E-TV’s most popular shows including “Nightlife”, “The Showbiz Report” and most recently “Behind the Name”. Over the years she has interviewed many national and international stars. Among these was the comical actor, Jim Carrey, who she found to be one of the most sincere and inspirational celebrities that she has yet to meet. Despite meeting many famous faces Nicky feels that the highlight of her career was the first Cannes Film Festival that she attended. Nicky believes that as the Matrics get ready to go out into the real world they should always keep others in mind and see themselves in perspective, which is something she herself lives by.
Tracey-Lee Flanders
Upon matriculating, Tracey-Lee Flanders enrolled to study Medicine at the University of Stellenbosch. It was in her third year of study that she was approached by a model scout and entered, and won, the ‘Face of Stellenbosch’ competition. In 2006 Tracey-Lee used her platform to enter the Miss South Africa pageant, where she was named Second Princess (third). In 2008 she graduated from medical school and was stationed at Addington Hospital in Durban to complete her internship. It was in this year that she was also invited back to Rustenburg High School for Girls as guest speaker for the year-end awards ceremony, the Celebration of Excellence. Tracey-Lee says that she absolutely loves her job and that, although it is often very challenging, being a doctor is rewarding as it affords her the opportunity to help those in need. Next year she will return to the Western Cape in order to complete her community service. Thereafter Tracey-Lee intends to travel, before returning to her studies once more by either specialising in Psychiatry or Internal Medicine.
