RGHS SENIOR DEBATERS are 2010 Western Province Champions
RGHS had the honour of having both our Senior and Junior teams qualify for the Western Province Debating Championships that was held at BISHOPS from 07 to 09 August 2010. Our Junior side (Saeeda Bassardien, Amina Vallie, Katherine Harris and Carla van Niekerk) made a positive start to their first year in these tournaments and won two of their four preliminary debates. There is no doubt that they have the ability to develop into a very powerful force in the years to come.
Congratulations to our Senior team (Angeliki Carvounes, Ameerah Allie, Cara Mazetti-Claassen, Chelsea Kelly and Tessa Collington-O’Malley) who narrowly defeated Westerford in the Final of the WP Debating Tournament that was held on Monday 09 August. In order to achieve to win this title, the team had competed in 6 preliminary rounds on Saturday 07 and Sunday 08 August to reach the quarter-finals against SACS and then the semi-finals against the “Independents” (Herzlia High School).
In addition to this achievement, two of our team members were named in the top ten list of the best speakers of the tournament. Cara Mazett-Claassen was placed joint 8th and Angeliki Carvounes was placed joint 2nd. Both Cara and Angeliki were selected to participate in the WP trials for the second year.
This has been an exceptional year for Senior Debating at RGHS and the team will be competing in the final of the Rotary League Championships against SACS on Monday 16 August 2010.
