Rustenburg is a school that prides itself on setting high standards in the academic arena, and the 2011 Matric class were no exception, with a 100% pass rate and 458 individual subject distinctions. At the 2011 National Senior Certificate Award Ceremony, Rustenburg was named the top school in the category: Excellence in Academic Performance - Western Cape.

In this category, awards are made to the top twenty schools in the province (including independent schools) that have achieved excellence in academic results in 2011, based on the following criteria:

  1. Consistency in number of grade 12 candidates over a period of 3 years (at least 90%) of previous years
  2. an overall pass rate of at least 95% in 2011
  3. % of candidates with access to Bachelor's degree
  4. % of candidates with Mathematics passes

Each school receives an award of R15 000 for the purchase of teaching and learning support material. The top 5 Western Cape schools were named as: Rustenburg, Herschel, Bishops, Herzlia & Rondebosch. See full list of WCED awards.
