The General Education and Training Phase (GET)
The Grade 8 and 9 curriculum includes 8 Learning Areas: Languages, Mathematics, Social Sciences (History and Geography), Natural Sciences, Economic and Management Sciences, Technology, Life Orientation, Arts and Culture. In addition, as part of their curriculum, all learners receive tuition and write external examinations in modules towards their International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) certificate.
Languages must include a Home Language (English) and a First Additional Language (either Afrikaans or isiXhosa).
For Arts and Culture, learners are required to choose a specific learning pathway: either Art, Drama or Music. At Rustenburg, learners also choose one additional “enrichment” subject. This could be another Arts and Culture learning pathway, or one of the Second Additional Languages offered (French, German or isiXhosa).
Taking a specific learning pathway and an enrichment subject widens learners’ subject choice options for the Further Education and Training Band (Grades 10 to 12), by giving them the foundation necessary to take these subjects from Grade 10 and achieve the required level of proficiency by the Grade 12 year.
The school reports to parents on learner progress each term, based on the assessment tasks completed during that term. This is conveyed by means of a percentage and corresponding rating code for each learning area, as shown below.

Promotion: Grade 9
In the latter part of their Grade 9 year, learners complete the Common Tasks for Assessment (CTAs) in all 8 Learning Areas. This consists of nationally set class-based tasks and assignments (Section A), as well as national examinations (Section B).
In calculating a learner's final promotion mark in each learning area, Continuous Assessment (CASS) counts 75% and the Common tasks for Assessment (CTAs) making up the remaining 25%.
