RBHS and RGHS concerto festival
Rondebosch Boys’ High School music department combines with performers from RGHS (pictured from l-r: Yohan Chun, Sara Lambert, Ingrid Pienaar, Alexandra Mould) to present a CONCERTO FESTIVAL. This Festival features talented musicians selected from both schools who will play one movement of a Concerto with a small chamber orchestra. They will be conducted by Gerrit de Jager who led the schools choral event, Vivaldi Gloria which was held in the City hall in 2008. The programme consists mainly of Baroque and Classical works with a variety of instrumentalists performing. This uplifting programme will last approximately 90 minutes.

Matthew Hurworth: Movement of Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto in E flat major
Matthew was selected as lead trumpeter for the Standard Bank National Schools Big Band at the National Youth Jazz Festival in Grahamstown last year.He is a member of the RBHS Concert and Jazz Bands and plays both jazz and classical trumpet. Matthew started playing the trumpet in Grade 8.
Sang-Woo Jun: First Movement of Mozart’s Violin Concerto in D major
In 2010 Sang-Woo took part in the Artscape National Music Competition and was chosen as one of the 12 semi-finalists. He has participated in both English and Afrikaans Eisteddfod receiving several prizes, including one for the Best Performer in the Strings category. Sang-Woo recently passed his ABRSM Grade 8 Violin Exam with Distinction by obtaining 96 %, he plays in the school’s String Ensemble.and is currently being tutored at Beau Soleil.
Michael Lawrenson: Second Movement of Marcello’s Oboe Concerto in C minor
Michael plays in the school’s Concert Band, the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, the UCT Wind Ensemble and the New Claremont Chamber Orchestra. In 2009 he was selected for the SA National Youth Wind Ensemble (Pretoria). In 2010 he was selected for the Stellenbosch International Chamber Fest Concert Orchestra, and the SA National Youth Orchestra (Durban). Michael has passed his ABRSM Grade 7 Oboe Exam and is working towards his Grade 8 Exam under Ionna Matei.
Tony Wan: First Movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 23 in A major
Tony was the RBHS Music Scholarship recipient in 2008. He was selected as one of the pianists to play in the Chopin/Schumann Music Festival at RGHS last year. He regularly participates in the Cape Town English and Afrikaans Eisteddfod, and obtained two Golden Diplomas last year. He completed his ABRSM Grade 7 Piano Exam with Distinction last year and is an accompanist of the Chamber Choir and String Ensemble at RBHS.
Yohan Chun: Second and Third Movements of Mozart’s Piano Concerto no 21 in C major
Yohan received a Silver Medal from Trinity College, London for obtaining the highest mark (92% for Grade 8 piano) in a Grade 5–8 examination in the Western Cape in 2010. She is the pianist in the highly successful RGHS Jazz Combo that performed recently in the `Jazz @ V&A’ Festival and also plays in the school’s Jazz Band. Yohan is also the harpsichord continuo player in the RGHS Baroque ensemble, Berocca G, which achieved a R3000 category prize at the International Ensemble Competition at the University of Stellenbosch in 2010. Yohan holds Full Colours for Music at RGHS and is currently also studying drumkit.
Sara Lambert & Ingrid Pienaar: Second movement from Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in Eb major
Sara Lambert (violin) was the RGHS Music Scholarship recipient in 2007. She achieved a Merit for her ABRSM Grade 7 violin examination in 2009 and is preparing to play her ABRSM Grade 8 examination in June this year. She is the leader of the RGHS Orchestra and the String Ensemble, and as the first violinist in Berocca G, she jointly achieved a R3000 Large Ensemble category prize at the International Ensemble Competition at the University of Stellenbosch in 2010. She participates regularly in the Cape Town and Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfods and holds Full Colours for Music at RGHS.
Ingrid Pienaar (viola) was selected to play in the National Youth Orchestra in Durban in December 2010 and in the same year attended the International Chamber Music Festival in Stellenbosch. Besides playing in the school’s Orchestra (of which she is the Head), Berocca G, String Ensemble and Wind Band, she is also the Deputy Head of the active Music Society Committee at RGHS. She achieved a Merit for her Grade 8 ABRSM viola examination last year and holds Full Colours for Music at RGHS. Ingrid has participated in numerous Cape Town and Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfods and is currently also studying the piano at an advanced level and plays the trumpet and trombone.
Alexandra Mould: Concerto in A minor, RV 108 by Antonio Vivaldi
Alexandra Mould was the RGHS Music Scholarship recipient in 2008. She achieved a Distinction for her Trinity Guildhall Grade 8 examination last year, and was awarded the Gold Medal in the Senior Recorder Section at the Kaapse Afrikaanse Eisteddfod. She has received master classes with the distinguished SA recorder players, Carin van Heerden (2011) and Irene Mennen (2010), both currently living and working in Germany, and will be a participant in a master class with Karin Maritz (from the University of Stellenbosch) at the 6th Recorder Symposium in March this year. Alexandra also plays the piano, bassoon and flute at an advanced level and participates in the school’s Recorder Ensemble, Berocca G, Wind Band and the Orchestra. She achieved Full Colours for Music at RGHS in 2010.
