SPORTS RESULTS and MORE ….

HOCKEY

1st Team vs Springfield – Friday 25 August @ RGHS

Score: Won 2-0

Goal scorers: Courtney Wheeler and Brittany Gouws

“An evenly contested battle, played mainly in the midfield as seen by the relatively few penalty corners awarded! (RGHS got 2 and Springfield none). The girls moved the ball around nicely and attacked down both sides of the field resulting in Courtney scoring off a penalty corner earned in the second chukka. Brittany scored off a penalty stroke in the third chukka when the ball hit a defenders foot on the goal line” – Coach Andi

1st Team vs Fairmont – Tuesday 29 August @ Fairmont

Score: 2-0

Goal scorers: Jacqueline Sissons and Casey Wheeler

“In a game where we held possession for large parts of the match, a 2-0 score line was a little disappointing. The number of goal scoring opportunities in the second half of the match increased as Fairmont became more tired, yet we were unable to score after Casey’s goal early in the third chukka. Nonetheless, this was a good result putting us up into 2nd place in the league standings and set us up well for our match against Herschel.” – Coach Andi

1st Team vs Herschel – Thursday 31 August @ Herschel

Score: 0-2

“In a tight match that was always going to be the battle of the midfield, RGHS started well and controlled the game for long periods of time in the first two chukkas. Herschel scored a good field goal down the right side of the field with Kayla de Waal coming off the baseline to beat Caroline Schreiber in goal. This unsettled the team somewhat and we lost the patience and discipline needed to play an unbeaten team like Herschel. We had numerous attempts on goal but with only the strikers pushing through, we did not have the support needed to work on the second phase aspect of goal scoring. Herschel scored off a penalty corner in the third chukka to win the game 2-0” – Coach Andi

All our girls played very well and showed much improved results from last year. Although we scored the same points as Wynberg, we were placed 3rd overall as Wynberg had beaten us in the RGHS vs WGHS round.

WATER POLO

The season opener TREADATHON took place this past weekend. Nicola Barrett (current SA Ladies player) treaded water for 24 hours for charity. She was well supported by the Water Polo community. Nicola was quite phenomenal only taking 2 x 5 minute breaks. Jodi Britnell (Gr 10) was equally impressive, treading for a full 12 hour period from 4pm until 4am. Congratulations on this incredible feat, Jodi.

NON-SCHOOL SPORTS:

FIGURE SKATING

The Gauteng Inter-Provincial Figure Skating Championships took place at The Ice Rink Festival Mall in Gauteng on 01, 02 and 03 September 2017.

Michaela Thomas (Gr 11) Skated for Team Junior Blades in the Non-National Introductory Synchro section.  The team attained first place and Michaela received a gold medal.  Michaela is also the team captain.

Western Province were also the overall winners of the competition. Congratulations on these excellent results, Michaela.

LIFE SAVING

Congratulations to Hannah Hillman (Gr 8) who qualified as a Junior Lifeguard on Sunday 3 September. She will now be doing voluntary duty on Big Bay Beach when the Lifesaving season starts. She has been a Nipper since the age of 7 years and has now moved up the ranks to a qualified Lifeguard. Look out for Hannah on the beach this Summer.

ROWING

On 18 August Peninsula Girls’ Rowing Club hosted an Inter-Schools Indoor Rowing Competition where teams of 5 girls from all the local girls’ schools were invited to participate and compete against one another over a 1000m distance. Each member of the 5-girl teams recorded a time, and these were then combined to provide a team total.

The Rustenburg Junior team (between the ages of 13-15) put together an impressive performance to win their division – even beating one of the Senior teams (ages 16-19) that were competing. Rustenburg Junior Girls walked away with the trophy for the best Junior Team and we look forward to them competing to retain their title next year.

The winning Rustenburg Rowers from left are: Madison Van Horsten and Danielle Henry (both in Grade 7 at RGJS), Abigayle Cohen (Gr 9), Kirsten MacArthur (Gr 8) and Cameryn Millar (Gr 9).
